ETH Zurich PhD Salary 2026: CHF 53,500 to 73,100 by Rate, and What You Keep
October 4, 2026
Two doctoral students at ETH Zurich can start on the same day and earn CHF 20,000 a year apart. Neither negotiated anything. They are simply in different departments, on different salary rates.
ETH publishes all five rates, and most departments publish which ones they use. Put those together with Zurich's tax table and you can work out your take-home pay before you ever write to a professor. Here is that calculation for 2026.
First: one university, five salary rates
Doctoral students at ETH Zurich are employees, normally at 100%, on a fixed-rate salary. There are five rates. Each has a starting salary in the first year and rises automatically in the second and third years; there is no further automatic step from the fourth year.
The Executive Board sets the amounts. The department is responsible for applying them fairly, and in practice the professorship or institute chooses one rate for its doctoral students. The rate is written into your employment contract, so you know it before you sign.

The fees a doctoral student actually pays
ETH Zurich and EPFL tripled the semester tuition fee for new international students in autumn 2025, to CHF 2,190. That increase was approved for bachelor's and master's students. Doctoral students do not pay semester tuition.
What a doctoral student with an Indian master's degree pays is a CHF 150 registration fee, a one-off flat-rate tuition fee of CHF 1,500 that falls due after you register for your doctoral examination, and compulsory semester fees of CHF 42. Over a four-year doctorate that comes to roughly CHF 2,000 in total.
Can you save in Zurich?
ETH's own estimate of fixed monthly costs for a single person is CHF 1,890: about CHF 900 for accommodation, CHF 400 for food, CHF 300 for health insurance, and the rest for transport, internet and insurance. Its advice is blunt: you may well spend CHF 2,000 a month without living in luxury. A room costs CHF 700–1,200 and a flat CHF 1,200–2,200.
On the standard rate, CHF 3,760 net against roughly CHF 2,000–2,500 of costs leaves about CHF 1,200–1,700 a month. On rate 5 the surplus is about double that. One detail helps: doctoral students in the canton of Zurich can use a recognised student health insurer instead of a standard policy, which ETH's student budget prices at about CHF 110 a month.
How admission works: the professor hires you
ETH states two conditions for a doctorate: a university master's degree, and a professor at ETH Zurich who offers you a doctoral position. There is no central doctoral school that places candidates. Each professor recruits their own doctoral students, positions are advertised on the ETH job board, and the university's advice is to contact the professorship directly. That makes the first email to a professor the real application.
Some fields also run structured doctoral programmes, and requirements differ by department. Computer Science, for example, runs a central application pool with no deadlines, does not require a language test, and treats the GRE as optional. Once a professor has accepted you, you register formally and are admitted provisionally; within twelve months you present your research plan at an aptitude colloquium, and passing it makes your admission definitive.
Your first contract generally runs for eighteen months and later ones for at least twelve. ETH says a doctorate takes a little more than four years on average, with a maximum of six.
The permit, and what happens after
ETH submits the work and residence permit application for you, and quotes four to six weeks for processing. Doctoral students are admitted outside the work-permit quotas, the permit is renewed each year, and a spouse can come with you and is in principle allowed to work.
After the doctorate you can apply for a six-month permit to look for a job. It cannot be extended, so start the search before you defend - Germany's window is 18 months by comparison. If you're applying from India: what these numbers mean in rupees
