PhD Abroad After B.Tech or M.Sc: Eligibility by Country for Indian Students (2026)
October 4, 2026
The first question most Indian students ask about a PhD abroad is not about funding. It is whether their degree is enough: a B.Tech without a master's, a three-year B.Sc followed by an M.Sc, an M.Tech from a state university.
Universities answer this in writing, country by country, on their own qualification pages. This article collects those answers for the seven destinations we work with, so you can see where your degree already qualifies and where one more step opens the door.
Can you enter a PhD with your degree? Country by country
| Country | Directly after a 4-year B.Tech or B.E. | After B.Sc + M.Sc, or an M.Tech |
|---|---|---|
| USA | Yes. Stanford accepts an Indian bachelor's in engineering for graduate study; MIT EECS admits bachelor's graduates straight into the PhD | Yes. The two-year master's after a three-year bachelor's is the accepted route |
| UK | At some universities. Cambridge treats a 4-year B.Tech as equal to a UK honours degree; Imperial accepts it for research from its listed group of institutions, such as the Institutes of National Importance, IISc and BITS | Yes |
| Germany | Through fast-track programs at some Max Planck schools; universities such as TU Munich ask for a master's | Yes. DAAD states an Indian master's is treated at par with a German master's |
| Canada | For highly qualified candidates: some Toronto departments admit directly from a bachelor's, and McGill has a direct-entry PhD1 route | Yes. A master's is the standard entry |
| Switzerland | At EPFL, holders of a 4-year bachelor's may apply; ETH Zurich asks for a master's, with a direct doctorate in computer science | Yes. A master's is the standard entry |
| Singapore | Yes, with a strong record. NTU asks for a bachelor's with honours at distinction level or its equivalent; NUS Computing for the equivalent of second class upper honours | Yes |
| Australia | With a substantial research component in the degree. Melbourne, for example, asks for research worth at least a quarter of one year | Yes, where the master's included a research component |
Based on each university's published requirements on 4 October 2026. Departments can set a higher bar than the university minimum, so read the page of the program you are applying to.

After B.Tech: where you can skip the master's
The USA is the clearest case. Stanford's table for Indian qualifications lists a bachelor's degree in engineering as sufficient for graduate study, and MIT EECS says that every admitted applicant is admitted into the PhD program, picking up the master's on the way if they do not have one. A B.Tech graduate with real research exposure applies to the same pool as everyone else. Our guide to a fully-funded PhD in the USA covers that route in full.
Singapore and EPFL are the two other places where a strong 4-year degree is enough to apply. NTU's research admission guide asks for a strong bachelor's degree with honours at distinction level or its equivalent, and EPFL says candidates with a 4-year or 5-year bachelor's may apply and should explain their education in the statement of objectives. In Germany the direct route runs through the Max Planck Society: several International Max Planck Research Schools and the Max Planck Schools take excellent bachelor's graduates into combined master's and PhD programs. We describe how those schools recruit in the Max Planck PhD salary guide.
In the UK and Canada, direct entry depends on the university and on your record. Cambridge counts a 4-year B.Tech or B.E. as equivalent to a UK honours degree. Imperial accepts a 4-year bachelor's for research from a named group that includes the Institutes of National Importance, IISc, BITS, BHU, JNU and the Universities of Delhi and Hyderabad, and asks for a master's from other institutions. Some University of Toronto departments admit highly qualified candidates directly from a bachelor's with an A-minus average, and McGill's PhD1 route is open to outstanding bachelor's graduates with extensive research experience.
After B.Sc and M.Sc: you qualify everywhere
The Indian three-plus-two route is well understood abroad. A three-year B.Sc alone is usually not enough for PhD entry: Stanford, for one, states that a three-year bachelor's is not sufficient and that the two-year master's that follows it is required. With the M.Sc in hand, that question closes. DAAD says an Indian master's degree is treated at par with a German master's, Cambridge lists the M.Sc after a three-year bachelor's at UK master's level, and UBC names the master's degree as its doctoral entry credential for India.
This makes Germany, Switzerland and the UK natural fits for M.Sc and M.Tech holders: these are the systems built around a master's followed by a three to four year doctorate. See our guides to a fully-funded PhD in Germany, Switzerland and the UK.
Grade lines universities publish for Indian applicants
| University | What it asks for | In Indian terms |
|---|---|---|
| Cambridge | UK 2:1, the usual minimum for postgraduate study | 70% or CGPA 7.3 out of 10; a First is 75% or CGPA 8.0 |
| Imperial, listed institutions | UK 2:1 | 7.5 out of 10 or 65%; a First is 8.0 or 70% |
| Imperial, other institutions | UK 2:1 | 8.0 out of 10 or 70%; a First is 8.5 or 75% |
| Toronto, PhD after a master's | B-plus average | 7.5 out of 10 or first class; 8 out of 10 from an IIT |
| Toronto, direct entry from a bachelor's | A-minus average | 8 out of 10 or first class with distinction; 9 out of 10 from an IIT |
| UBC | Minimum academic standing for India | First class (65%) or 8 on a 10-point scale |
| McGill, PhD1 direct entry | Cumulative GPA of 3.7 out of 4.0 | Plus extensive research experience |
These are the lines at which a university will consider an application, as published on 4 October 2026. Funded offers are decided on the whole file: research experience, recommendation letters and fit with a professor.
What decides it once you are eligible
Eligibility gets your file read. What wins a funded place is evidence that you can do research: a thesis or final-year project with real results, an internship in a lab, a paper or a preprint, and recommenders who supervised that work. Australia writes this into its entry rule, asking for a degree with a substantial research component, and every other system applies the same test in practice.
The second deciding factor is a professor who wants you in their group. In Germany, Switzerland and Canada that agreement often comes before the formal application. Our guide on how to email a professor for a PhD position covers that step, and the free PhD Readiness Score rates your profile on these same criteria in about two minutes.

The one-line takeaway
A 4-year B.Tech opens direct PhD entry in the USA, Singapore, at EPFL and through Max Planck fast-track programs; a B.Sc plus M.Sc or an M.Tech qualifies you in all seven destinations.
Frequently asked questions
Can I do a PhD abroad directly after B.Tech?
Yes, in several countries. US universities admit 4-year bachelor's graduates straight into PhD programs; MIT EECS, for example, admits every successful applicant into the PhD. NTU and NUS in Singapore accept a strong bachelor's degree, EPFL lets holders of a 4-year bachelor's apply, and some Max Planck schools in Germany run fast-track programs for bachelor's graduates. In the UK and Canada it depends on the university and your record.
Is a 3-year B.Sc plus a 2-year M.Sc from India accepted for a PhD abroad?
Yes. The master's after a three-year bachelor's is the accepted route. Stanford states that the two-year master's following a three-year Indian bachelor's is required, DAAD says an Indian master's is treated at par with a German master's, and Cambridge lists the M.Sc after a three-year bachelor's at UK master's level.
Can I do a PhD in the USA without a master's degree?
Yes, with a 4-year bachelor's degree such as a B.Tech or B.E. Stanford lists an Indian bachelor's in engineering as sufficient for graduate study, and MIT EECS admits bachelor's graduates directly into its PhD program. Graduates of three-year degrees need the two-year master's as well.
Do I need a master's degree for a PhD in Germany?
In most cases, yes. TU Munich, for example, requires an above-average master's degree and does not offer fast-track doctorates. The exception is the Max Planck Society: several International Max Planck Research Schools and the Max Planck Schools admit excellent bachelor's graduates into combined master's and PhD programs.
What CGPA do I need for a PhD in the UK?
Cambridge equates a UK 2:1 with 70% or a CGPA of 7.3 out of 10 from India, and a First with 75% or 8.0. Imperial sets a 2:1 at 7.5 out of 10 or 65% for its listed group of Indian institutions and at 8.0 or 70% for others. Individual courses can ask for more.
What CGPA do I need for a PhD in Canada?
The University of Toronto asks for a B-plus average in a master's, which it equates to 7.5 out of 10 or first class from India, or 8 out of 10 from an IIT. UBC's minimum for Indian applicants is first class (65%) or 8 on a 10-point scale. McGill's direct-entry PhD1 route asks for a 3.7 out of 4.0.
