About the project
Language models can write smooth interpretations of a text while hiding the cultural assumptions, doubts and alternative readings behind them. This project, CuRe, funded by Independent Research Fund Denmark, studies how such models reason about culture and ambiguity, using literary texts as a hard test case. Will build datasets and benchmarks that link passages to their cultural context, evidence and expert readings, analyse where models go wrong and how confidently they present uncertain claims, and develop methods for grounding interpretations in evidence and representing several plausible readings. Results will be tested through experiments and studies with literary scholars. The work mainly uses modern Scandinavian literature, but knowing a Scandinavian language is not required. A research stay at McGill University is planned.
