Is GATE or CSIR NET Valid for a PhD Abroad? Where the Score Counts in 2026

October 4, 2026

If you have a GATE score or have cleared CSIR NET, you have already passed one of the hardest filters in Indian science and engineering. The natural question is whether that result travels: does a university abroad accept it, and does it save you from sitting the GRE?

The short answer is yes in Singapore, yes for some master's programs in Germany, and not as a formal requirement anywhere else we could find on an official admissions page. The longer answer, with the exact wording each university uses, is below.

Where a GATE score is officially accepted abroad

UniversityWhat the official page saysConditions
NTU Singapore, all research programsGRE, GMAT and GATE are optional, and a strong score will enhance your applicationGATE at or above the 90th percentile, taken within 3 years of applying; some programs may still require a test
NTU Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering PhDApplicants from India may use a GATE score in place of the GREAt least the 90th percentile, test date within 3 years
NTU Electrical and Electronic Engineering PhDApplicants from India may use GATE in place of the GREThe GRE alternative there is at least 149 in each of Verbal and Quantitative, 319 combined
NUS Computing PhDCandidates who graduated from Indian universities may submit GATE scores instead of the GRENo minimum GATE score is published
TU Munich, selected master's programsA current GRE or GATE is required for certain degree courses for applicants with an Indian bachelor'sMaster's programs only; graduates of an IIT upload their IIT transcript instead

Singapore is where GATE helps a PhD application most

Both of Singapore's big research universities name GATE on their admissions pages. NTU's university-wide guide for research programs lists GRE, GMAT and GATE together as optional tests that strengthen an application, and sets the bar for Indian applicants at the 90th percentile, with a score no more than three years old. Its mechanical and electrical engineering schools go further and say plainly that a GATE score can be used in place of the GRE.

NUS Computing says graduates of Indian universities may submit GATE scores instead of the GRE for its PhD in computer science. For a B.Tech or M.Tech graduate who has already sat GATE, that removes a whole round of test preparation and a test fee. One practical note: your scorecard shows your All India Rank and the number of candidates who appeared in your paper, and those two numbers give you your percentile.

What the score sits alongside matters as much as the score. Both universities fund PhD students through research scholarships, and we set out what those pay in our Singapore PhD stipend guide. The full route is in our guide to a fully-funded PhD in Singapore.

Germany: GATE counts for master's entry at TU Munich, not for the doctorate

TU Munich asks applicants with an Indian bachelor's degree to provide a current GRE or GATE for certain master's programs, including its informatics programs, Data Engineering and Analytics, and Automotive Engineering, and it accepts only GATE for Computational Mechanics. Graduates of an Indian Institute of Technology are told to upload their IIT transcript in place of the test. All of this concerns master's admission. TU Munich's doctoral requirements mention neither test: what a German doctorate needs is a recognised master's degree and a professor who agrees to supervise you.

It is worth checking each university rather than assuming. RWTH Aachen's International Academy, for example, states that GATE cannot be accepted as a substitute for the GRE for its master's programs. For a German PhD, the time is better spent on the supervisor search, which we cover in our guide to a fully-funded PhD in Germany.

USA, UK, Canada, Australia and Switzerland

We found no official admissions page in these countries that accepts GATE in place of the GRE. In the USA the question is fading anyway, because many leading departments no longer read GRE scores at all: MIT EECS says it does not use the GRE in its admission process, and Berkeley EECS neither requires nor accepts it. Where there is no GRE to replace, there is nothing for GATE to stand in for.

That does not make the score worthless on these applications. A high All India Rank is a clear, checkable sign of quantitative strength, and it belongs on your CV and in the achievements section of the form. It supports your file; it does not substitute for a requirement.

CSIR NET and JRF: a strong credential, not a ticket abroad

We found no university or funder abroad that lists CSIR-UGC NET as an admission requirement or accepts it in place of another test. Like a GATE rank, it works as evidence: clearing NET, and especially winning a JRF, tells a professor abroad that you ranked near the top of a national exam in your subject.

The fellowship itself stays in India. CSIR's rules state that its fellowships are tenable in India, and that only Indian citizens residing in India are eligible. So a JRF cannot fund a PhD at a foreign university. A funded PhD abroad pays through the host instead: a salary in Germany and Switzerland, a research-council studentship in the UK, an assistantship in the USA. Our article on what a funded PhD abroad actually costs shows how little of the bill is left to you.

QuestionAnswer
Can GATE replace the GRE for a PhD in Singapore?Yes at NTU engineering schools (90th percentile, within 3 years) and at NUS Computing
Can GATE replace the GRE in Germany? For several TU Munich master's programs, yes. German doctorates ask for neither test
Can GATE replace the GRE in the USA?No official acceptance found; many top programs no longer use the GRE at all

The one-line takeaway

GATE officially replaces the GRE at NTU and NUS Computing in Singapore and for some TU Munich master's programs; everywhere else, GATE and CSIR NET are strong CV credentials, and a CSIR fellowship cannot be held abroad.

Frequently asked questions

Is a GATE score valid for a PhD abroad?

In Singapore, yes. NTU lists GATE alongside the GRE and GMAT as an optional test for research programs, with a minimum of the 90th percentile for applicants from India and a score no more than three years old, and its mechanical and electrical engineering schools accept GATE in place of the GRE. NUS Computing lets graduates of Indian universities submit GATE scores instead of the GRE. Elsewhere it is a CV credential, not a formal requirement.

Which foreign universities accept GATE instead of the GRE?

NTU Singapore (for example its Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Electrical and Electronic Engineering PhD programs), NUS Computing for its PhD in computer science, and TU Munich for several master's programs such as its informatics programs, Data Engineering and Analytics, Automotive Engineering and Computational Mechanics.

What GATE score do I need for NTU Singapore?

NTU asks for a GATE result at or above the 90th percentile, taken within three years of the date of application. GATE is optional at university level, though some programs may still require a test score.

Can I do a PhD in Germany with a GATE score?

GATE is used at TU Munich for admission to certain master's programs, not for the doctorate. A German PhD needs a recognised master's degree and a professor who agrees to supervise you; neither the GRE nor GATE is part of TU Munich's doctoral requirements.

Do US universities accept GATE instead of the GRE?

We found no official US admissions page that accepts GATE in place of the GRE. Many leading programs no longer use the GRE at all: MIT EECS does not use GRE scores in admission, and Berkeley EECS neither requires nor accepts them.

Is CSIR NET valid for a PhD abroad?

No foreign university or funder we could find lists CSIR-UGC NET as an admission requirement. It is still worth stating on your CV, because it shows you ranked highly in a national subject exam.

Can I use my CSIR JRF fellowship for a PhD abroad?

No. CSIR's rules state that its fellowships are tenable in India and open only to Indian citizens residing in India. A funded PhD abroad is paid by the host university, institute or funder instead.
